Location

It occupies an area of 1494 square kilometres and borders on the Autonomous Republic of Daghestan, Russian Federation, Dedoplis-Tzgharo District, Republic of Georgia as well as Zakatala, Shaki, Yevlakh and Khanlar Districts, Republic of Azerbaijan.

Historical Introduction

In the 18th century, most of the 60 villages, at present forming part of the district, comprised Georgians forcefully converted to Islam. Several of them, such as Zagyan, Tasmalur, Marsan and Mald, were Armenian-inhabited, their population having undergone the same crucible. Written records on the Armenians’ presence in the district centre, i.e. the township of Kakh, date back to the 1760s.
