Verin (Upper) Derik Village Site

Location

Verin Derik, which once belonged to the monastery of Derik, is situated on the right side of a stream, “in a narrow gorge west of the monastery, within 20 minutes [1.1 km] of it.”

Population

Most presumably, this village shared the fate of the other mountain villages of Salmast (especially those located in the west of the district) and was abandoned by its Armenian population immediately after the Russo-Persian war of 1826 to 1828.

In the late 19th century, Verin Derik was already inhabited by a small number of Kurds.

Later it was forsaken and reduced to a village site.
