Historical Introduction

The fourth church of Tzar was also alled Surb Sarkis.

In conformity with the defective inscription, carved on the only entrance in the western facade this church was constructed in 1279.

Architectural Description

The church was a vaulted single-nave basilica with external dimensions 6.70 x 4.60-m.

Repairs
17 c․

Owing to the renovation conducted in the XVII cent., it was totally preserved. Obvious traces of repair were visible on the upper parts of facades.

Description

The walls of Surb Sarkis bear 7 additional epigraphic inscriptions, mostly votive, dated between 1285 and 1311.

Inscription, Armenian, Engraved, Construction 1279 y․

Carved on the only entrance in the western facade this church:
“In year 1279. under the prior-ship of father athanas, under the rule of the son of doop, deacon ohan and ohannes built this surb sargis, to plead for the life and salvation of souls. whoever read...”
