Historical Introduction

The library of Akhalkalak, founded in 1880, boasted a rich collection of books and periodicals in the late 19th century: “On 14 May 1880, the Armenians opened a library/reading-hall which is divided in two parts, one intended for males, and the other for females. At present it has about 1,500 Armenian and Russian books, and annually receives more than 21 periodicals in these two languages.”
