Location

Kakhet (otherwise also spelled as Cahetia), which is one of the most important historical regions in Georgia, occupies the area in the basin of the rivers Ior and Alazan, i.e. the left tributaries of the river Kur. It borders on the watershed of the Great Caucasus in the north and northeast, the river Kur in the south and the Kartli mountain chain in the west. The Region, including Heret and Kambechan forming integral parts of Kakhet, occupies an area of nearly 17,000 square kilometres, but the present-day Republic of Georgia includes only about 12,000 square kilometres of Old Kakhet. The rest, comprising the modern districts of Belokan, Zakatala and Kakh as well as the territories of Ghazakh, Touz, Shamkhor and Khanlar (South Kambechan) located on the left bank of the Kur, constitute part of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
