Location

It is located on both banks of the river Alazan and borders on Akhmeta, Sagarejo, Gurjaan, Ghvareli Districts, Republic of Georgia and the Autonomous Republic of Daghestan, Russian Federation.

Historical Introduction

Telav is the only district in Kakhet, which had functioning Armenian schools. Among the historical monuments Sourb Astvatzatzin (Holy Virgin), Dzvelgavan’s St. Gevorg, Sourb Yerordutiun (Holy Trinity), Tzinandal’s Sourb Astvatzatzin and others can be distinguished.

Population

In different periods, the Georgian inhabitants in the district’s 19 settlements lived side by side with the Armenians. The latter formed an overwhelming majority only in Telav City as well as Ruispir and Sanior Villages, constituting a small number in the other villages.
