Historical Introduction

“Since the Armenian Catholics of the city form an extremely small number, they have neither a church nor a chapel...” In the late 19th century, the Catholic Armenians of Akhalkalak raised the issue of building a prayer-house, but in 1900 the authorities banned them from doing so. Nevertheless, later they succeeded in founding one, with Priest of Bavra Village Simon Khachatrian as their spiritual leader.

In 1915 Akhalkalak had only 54 Armenian Catholics. In 1916 the Armenian Catholic citizens were permitted to raise up to 2,000 roubles for the repairs of their prayer-house.
