Historical Introduction

The Armenian church of Hovvi (Shepherd’s), once belonging to the city of Jugha and standing opposite its site, on the right (Iranian) bank of the Arax. In the 2000s, the monument was restored—although with certain evident mistakes—on the initiative of the Iranian authorities. After the total annihilation of the world-renowned Armenian necropolis of Jugha between 2005 and 2006, the Azeri bandits crossed the Arax and destroyed Hovvi Church with the silent connivance of the Iranian frontier guards who were Turkish Azeris in origin. Later the powers of Iran put all the border guards who had supported the criminals with their neutrality on trial and started renovating the church, which was still in this process as of 2010.
