Historical Introduction

In 1964, the city yet hadn’t any Armenian school, but the number of school-age (5-12 years old) children was around 40.
A small number of Armenian children of Shahpoor studied their native language at a woman- teacher’s home.

Another correspondence of 1964 cited the speech of the chairman of the Diocesan Parliamentary Assembly Hayk Stepanian: “They haven’t any opportunity to teach Armenian. They have no library. The pupils are attending a state school. There is an intention to build a national house where will be created conveniences to teach the children according to the best Armenian traditions. But their own resources are insufficient and they need assistance.”

In the summer of 1965, the Armenian Deanery Council of Shahpoor (chairman Priest Mesrop Minassian) called on Armenians of Salmast, especially those living in Tehran, to provide material support for opening an Armenian school in the city.
