In 1906 David Paatian, a second-class merchant from Sghnakh, whose son, student Nikoghayos Paatian had been buried in the church vestibule in 1893, undertook the construction of a belfry in perpetual memory of his son. The work, which was delayed till 1910, remained incomplete in the aftermath of its initiator’s murder in Suram.

According to a press publication, the belfry was accomplished in 1910, the building expenses amounting to 1.500 roubles. The newly-founded bell tower lacked a bell, which the people hoped benefactor David Paatian would buy.
